This week we farewelled Miss Aroha Kale, who has been training as a teacher in Room 16 this term. We had fun learning with Miss Kale and we wish her well in her new teaching position starting next Tuesday at Tawhai School.

Time with our buddies
On Friday afternoons we try to get together with our senior buddy class. Today Mrs Adams and Room 6 came and sang with us. Here is Izzy leading the two classes in song.
PE and Sports
In Term 2 we are learning to throw, catch, bounce and kick big balls. Here we are practising our ball control before a game of soccer.

Honesty.
I'm honest by giving things back to whoever they belong to and that would make me a good friend. Throwing someone's ball at them and stealing it, that's not being honest. Being honest is finding something and giving it back. In some countries when someone steals they chop their hand off so they can never steal again. If you have an honest heart it will lead to honest actions.

Once at school I saw a little doll on the ground and I wanted to take it home but I couldn't take it home because I knew that the toy was someone else's. Then the person came and I gave it back to her.

Cross Country 2014
We had been practising for weeks. The sun was finally shining, the parents were gathered and we were ready to race!
Room 16 put on a good show this year, taking out 3 of the 4 top positions in the boys' race and 2 of the top 3 positions in the girls' race. Congratulations to Laila and Ethan for winning the Year 2 Cross Country races for 2014, to Callum and Pesi for their third placings and Taine for 4th. Well done to all who put in their best effort.

Money-wise
On Thursday we had Vane, from ASB, come to visit Room 16. He showed us all of the different money that we have in New Zealand and we talked about what we use money for. Sometimes we have to spend money on things that we need, like food and power. Sometimes we spend money on things we want, like toys and lollies. We need to make sure that we pay for the things we need before we pay for the things we want. It was great fun to see Vane again.

Room 16 maths
This term our Triangles maths group is learning to add and subtract numbers by using strategies that are faster than counting on and back. Today they were adding several numbers together by pairing up numbers to make tens, then adding the tens with the leftover ones to get their answers. Before they could use this strategy, they had to know all of the compatible numbers to 10, like 6+4 and 2+8. This is why basic facts are so important to learn.
One game we play to learn our compatible numbers to 10, is frogs and lily pads. One person has 10 frogs and they hide some of them under the lily pad while their partner closes their eyes. Then the second person opens their eyes and checks how many frogs are on top of the lily pad. They need to work out how many frogs are hiding underneath.
