This week we continued our research into the interdependence between bees and flowers. We used a graphic organiser to write down 'What if there were no bees?' We had found out a lot about what honey bees do so we had some good ideas about what would happen if there were no bees to pollinate plants like fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains and coffee beans.

Honey Tasting
This week we tasted 3 types of honey. The first was Honeydew honey. It was a golden colour and was see through like glass. Honeydew honey is runny, smooth and very sweet.
The next honey we tried was Clover honey. It was white and thick but nice and smooth and not too sweet.
Next we had manuka honey. This was thick like the clover honey but it was dark brown and quite grainy on our tongues.

Sumdog
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We have just started using a new
mathematics website in our classroom called Sumdog (http://www.sumdog.com). On
Sumdog, students can play maths games to practice their number knowledge . I have already created an account for your
child, and I hope that you will help them log in and use the website at
home. Their account information is:
- First initial of first name and last 2 initials of Surname for login name eg John Smith would be jsm -- room16 for password
- trentham1 for school code.
They should log into their account from the
Sumdog main page. Once they have done
this, they will automatically be taken to the student homepage.
They can select
a topic by clicking on the green box on the left hand side of the screen. The
games will then ask them questions based on the topic selected. If no topics
have been selected, Sumdog will learn from their answers and adapt the questions
to suit their level.
I hope you and your child will enjoy using
this new resource!
Sincerely,
Mary Walker

Busy Bees
We have been learning about how bees collect pollen and nectar from flowers. The pollen is fed to the queen and babies in the hive and the nectar is made in to honey. The bees eat the honey in the winter when there are not many flowers with pollen. While the bees are going from flower to flower, they are pollinating each flower with the pollen that is on them. WE made our own flowers and used rashuns and twisties as the flower anthers. Then we made our own bees and gave them black pipe cleaner feet. As our bees travelled from flower to flower, they collected 'pollen' from the flower anthers and spread it to other flowers. This is pollination.
