Pizza!

In Term 2 we found out how to make bread the traditional way, by hand.  We also looked at how bread is made in a bakery that services supermarkets, where the bread-making and packaging processes are done by machine.  To celebrate all the learning we have done in Term 3 we decided to make pizza for our lunch on the last day of school.  We made the bread by hand, cooked our bases, then added our toppings and cooked them again.  We finished up with a brownie and a slice of apple.

Thanks to Leanne, Jodie and Roxy for all their help.

Jodie's Pizza Bases

1 and 1/4 cups warm water
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Tablespoon dried yeast granules
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups wholemeal or white flour (we used 2 cups white and one cup wholemeal)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Dissolve sugar in warm water, sprinkle yeast granules over.  Add oil and stir gently.  Stand for 5 minutes.  Once mixture looks bubbly or foamy, add remaining ingredients, mixing baking powder in to one cup of flour so it spreads evenly through the mixture.
Stir mixture until dough comes away from sides of bowl and forms a ball.  Knead for a few minutes till dough is smooth, then flatten the dough onto well oiled baking sheet either as one large pizza or 5-6 smaller round ones.  Leave to rise 5-15 mins and bake for 12-15 mins at 230c.  Can be frozen at this stage till needed.

MW's Brownies

185g butter
280g energy chocolate, broken roughly
1 and ½ cups caster sugar
3 teaspoons vanilla
3 eggs
1 and ½ cups plain flour (or Gluten-free mix for wheat-free brownies)

Melt butter and chocolate in pan over low heat, watching carefully and stirring a little so it doesn't burn. Remove from heat, stir in sugar and vanilla.  (Cool slightly so eggs don’t cook as you add them).
Quickly add lightly beaten eggs one at a time, then flour.

Pour into baking paper-lined long or square tin and bake in moderate oven 30 mins.  Cool in tin, then cut.

We have really enjoyed learning to control and move a hockey ball in Term 3.  We will practise our new skills in Term 4.

Room 16's artwork

Calendars, hard-covered diaries, soft-covered notebooks and cards can be ordered from this Monday to Friday at the school office.  The kids in Room 16 really enjoyed using different painting techniques to produce their artwork and they are really proud of it.

Golders Cottage

At last the weather and volunteers agreed on a lovely day for us to visit Golder's Cottage.  We saw lots of interesting things that they used in houses 100 years ago.  Most of us agreed that the kitchen with its wood fired stove was very interesting and we particularly liked using the pump in the back yard to pump our own water.  MW doesn't think we would like it so much if we had to pump it on a cold morning so we could wash ourselves with it!  Other things we enjoyed seeing were the old-fashioned copper washing machine, the little bedrooms upstairs with the old bed-warmers and candles for light, and the amazing big dolls house downstairs.  We found the original outhouse toilet at the far end of the garden quite fascinating.

Like Angels

On Tuesday we had our last Arts rotation and Room 16 went to Room 14 to sing with Mrs Wasley.  We had a great time and we all came back to sing Mrs Walker and Leanne our favourite. MW thinks that Room 16 are wonderful singers.
